Connect to the Right Wireless Network

In Windows XP: Your wireless connection should be configured so that it connects only to "access points" and not "peer-to-peer" networks.

  • Click the "Start" button - bottom left of the screen
  • Select Setting
  • Select Control Panel
  • Select Network connections
  • Select the Wireless connection
  • Select Properties
  • Select the Wireless Networks tab
  • In the Preferred networks area, remove all listings that have UWO in them
  • Select the Advanced button
  • Select Access point (infrastructure) networks only button
  • Select "OK" until all windows are closed
  • Right click the wireless Icon in the notification area on the bottom right hand of the tool bard, and select "Repair"

In Windows Vista: Select the correct icon when choosing the UWO network that you are going to connect to.

In Macintosh Computers:

  • Go to system preferences
  • Select the network icon from the Internet and Network section
  • In the network status window, double click airport
    In the airport winodw, select the airport tab
  • Change "by default join automatic" to "by default join prefered networks"
  • Click the options button
  • Ensure that "if no prefered networks are found" is set to "ask before joining an open network" at the bottom of window
  • Uncheck "automatically add new networks" to the preferred networks list
